I haven't had a lot of practical use for this sight but it works well and does what it's supposed to. It has to be adjusted for the focal length in order for the sight to be accurate, so it may be more beneficial for a prime lens or a lens that will be used almost exclusively at a certain focal length i.e. a 100-400mm that stays around the long end of the range. Target acquisition is quicker for long-distance, since you're not having to hunt around for your subject. You have a broader field of view to gauge roughly where you're going to zoom in on and then you can go to the viewfinder and be pretty close. The sight is well built and feels like nice quality equipment. Adjustment is simple which is good because it will need to be adjusted all the time in order to work properly. For a photography gadget I say the price is pretty good.

I used this on my R7 camera and was able to more easily spot subjects and identify where I was actually aiming my camera; this is pretty important when you're dealing with very long focal distances and thus very narrow fields of view. This helped me eyeball what I was looking at so I could get myself oriented.

This works pretty well IF you know how to use it. I read another review where the person didn't know how to "zero" the reticle to where your lens is pointing. You have to zoom/focus on an object, then use the dials to move the reticle to where your lens is focused. Then, you can basically point at objects and be able to frame them without having to zoom out or hunt. You can switch between a red/green reticle.

I added this dot finder to my telescope. Works really well - small foam factor, easy mount, wont' blind your eyes...One thing I didn't like was it came with no battery. I had no spare watch battery, so I had to grab one from a remote controller. The battery is less than a dollar, so they could have included with the dot finder.Hence minus one star - very frustrating when you opened the package and cannot use right away. Amazon delivered this after 8 p.m., and all local store who sells battery were closed.The finder has green/red dot you can switch. Controlling position of the dot was very smooth and easy.I like pop-up on feature. Just pop up the cover, and it's on.It's small so it won't add any weight to my ES ED-102 FC telescope - it's already heavy with tracking scope, imaging camera, Asiair, and power brick.It's unfortunate that the company makes good product, but lacks on customer service (by skipping battery). If it's AA battery, I have no complaints, since they are everywhere in your home, but flat watch battery, you have to buy new one.... Not very good feeling.

The negative reviews may be from folks who aren't properly aligning it. It's not an install and go right to using, nor is it meant for a static subject. That's an easy capture either with the eyepiece or with Live View. This dot-sight is intended for use with long telephoto lenses and moving subjects.The first time on camera will require a few minutes of calibration. You have both a vertical and horizontal alignment dial and both marked up/down or left/right. What worded for me is setting up with a stop sign at the end of the block. That's roughly in the middle of the range I'd be using my 450mm lens. I started with normal focus and a sample shot with the sign dead-center, and then using the TTArtisan dot-sight to take another shot. Compare the two. It's simple trial and error. You have it right when the stop sign is in the very center of the captured photo, which in my case, and being unfamiliar with the sensitivity/responsiveness of the control wheels, took perhaps 8-10 minutes. It won't take that long from then on, since the TTArtisan will now be close to correct when you use in the future. This morning it took less than a minute to make the minor adjustment needed when remounting it.The performance is great. Truly impressive! Yes, it's plastic, and yes it has a slight mount of play on the hotshoe. That's why you have to fine-tune it before each trip out. But what it gives me in added photo success is well worth that minute of adjustment. I had at best three seconds or so to locate the bald eagle in the sky, which appeared out of nowhere.With my lens at max zoom, it's often hot-or-miss at finding a flying bird in that big sky before it's already out-of-range or in the trees. With the dot-sight it was childs-play to find it, focus and fire. Needless to say I captured three focused shots in that three seconds the eagle was in view.So a few of the other details. You have the option of either a green or red dot. I'm using red. It also has a brightness adjustment. It does not come with the CR2032 button battery it requires, but they're cheap and easy to find. Fortunately, you won't be drawing power from the battery unless actively using the TTArtisan. When open it's on, closed it is off. That's why a power switch wouldn't have any value, and might even be a negative. As designed, you always know if it is on or not. For the low cost of the TTArtisan I won't fault them for not including a battery. Competing sights are far more expensive and typically need expensive adapters or slide-mounts for your hotshoe.So I highly recommend the TTArtisan Dot-Sight for any wildlife shooter. It allows me to keep my lens at full-zoom, while allowing me to maintain a full view of the sky and quick, easy subject acquisition.Just buy it, and take the time to understand how it works. Spend a few minutes calibrating and be paid back with way more photography success, and more confidence you can capture the shot. It works and works well, despite what a couple other reviewers might say. I'm looking forward to photographs of sparrows in the spring which have always been a serious challenge for me.Just remember what it's for:It's NOT for portraits or landscape or macros. It IS for sports, wildlife, and action using telephoto lenses.
